This is always an interesting subject.
What I keep asking myself is this :
"If we all basically believe in a god of love, why do we kill eachother over religion ? Wouldn't we be better off without religion?"
Religion & God are not synonymous, in fact they are constantly so far apart that it is hard to see the relationship. I see religion as just another form of population control. If we all believe in on true creator, then why not see all our individual differences in religion as part of a discovery; after all, if there is only one God, then God guides us all.
A good example of this is JR Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' in whic there is one true Creator but lots of lower rank, ministering, gods.
The christian bible's First Commandment is "Thou shalt have no God BEFORE me."
Religion sets us against each other by making us take sides and prescibing to a specific standard, outside of which there is only evil. This "Im right and you're wrong" attitude is in such contradiction with the very word 'Faith' which, by definition, says you don't know.
I have a very simple, if not pessimistic, rule :
Control < Power < Money < Religion/Politics/etc
If you look close enough, there is always a primary drive for control through money, unity, religion(unity).
